Book 50/30.
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
‘Tis is the sequel to the Pulitzer Prize–winning Angela’s Ashes: A Memoir of a Childhood and ‘tis with a heavy heart I say ‘twas no Angela’s Ashes 🥴
I read Angela’s Ashes in 2017 and absolutely loved it! It was a 5 star read and in my Goodreads review of it I wrote (in part):
I quite enjoyed this. Such a bittersweet tale. The most astounding aspect of it is the lack of sorrowfulness. This book brought tears to my eyes a number of times. It’s highly impressive that McCourt managed to tell a tale of such sadness and despair without at any one time being woe-is-me about it all.
It was also very funny. I laughed out loud a lot, particularly his essay on if Jesus had grown up in Limerick. Lol.
‘Tis is also bittersweet, but at a significantly lower level than its predecessor. I might have enjoyed ‘Tis more had the author not been too verbose about everything and too woe-is-me about his plight. Frank McCourt threw one too many pity parties for my liking and used wayyy more words than necessary and ‘twas not long before I was struggling to generate sympathy for him and started losing interest in his story.
