Book 21/30.
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is my second Angie Thomas read, the first being her debut The Hate U Give that I read for book 21/30 of my 2022 reading challenge. And since I love a full circle moment, I decided to read On the Come Up for book 21/30 of my 2024 reading challenge 🤩
Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least make it out of her neighborhood one day. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died before he hit big, Bri’s got big shoes to fill. But now that her mom has unexpectedly lost her job, food banks and shutoff notices are as much a part of Bri’s life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it—she has to make it.
I enjoyed THUG well-enough and rated it 4 stars even though my expectations exceeded my reading experience 😅 I was looking forward to reading the author’s sophomore book, but unlike THUG I did not go into On The Come Up with sky-high expectations which in turn did not colour my reading experience and allowed me to enjoy the book as is.
