Could a superstar singer also be a cold-hearted killer?
It’s a trial that has electrified the world. Not only because the defendant is Maggie Bradford, the woman whose songs have captured hearts across the globe. And not only because the victim is Will Shepherd, the internationally admired athlete. But also because people are saying that Maggie has murdered not just one husband, but two.
I first read Hide and Seek well over a decade ago, and when I came across a thrifted copy last year for around $3 I decided to buy it so I can have my own copy, because nostalgia. I remember enjoying Along Came a Spider and Kiss the Girls, as well as a number of other books in James Patterson‘s Alex Cross series. So I went into this expecting to enjoy it the second time around, but as Taylor Swift sings, nostalgia is a mind’s trick because this was nowhere near as good as I remember it. The writing was juvenile, the characters fell flat – Will in particular was a caricature of a moustache-twirling TV villain, the storyline often veered towards ludicrous and the dialogue towards ridiculous, and the pacing was all over the place.
