A Time to Kill by John Grisham

Book 36/30.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I had no idea this was John Grisham‘s first book until I read the author’s note at the beginning of the novel and all I can say is the talent is real! This was a well-written, relatively fast paced legal thriller that did not read like a debut at all. The characters were all very lifelike, the setting jumped right off the page and the storyline was quite intriguing with lots of action and suspense that kept me turning the pages when I should have been doing other things 😅

That said, there were a few things I didn’t like so much about this book which is why I rated it 4 stars and not 5:
1) Jake – he had some heavy-duty entitled white boy shit going on that made it hard for me to like him
2) The excessive use of the word nigger 🤮🤮🤮
3) The length – it’s 515 pages of what I like to call Bible font, but not all those pages were necessary

All in all this was a very enjoyable read. Prior to this I hadn’t read a Grisham book since my primary/high school days so this was a lovely reminder of just how much, and why, I enjoyed his books 20+ years ago.
