Losing It by Cora Carmack

Book 41/30.

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I started reading this on September 8th, aka GUTS day, and because Olivia Rodrigo is a new adult I deliberately chose this New Adult novel by Cora Carmack as she is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of the NA genre. Sadly, unlike GUTS which is ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY PHENOMENAL, this was absolutely nothing special 🥴

Losing It tells the story of Bliss Edwards, a twenty-something year old who is sick of being the only virgin among her friends and decides the best way to deal with the problem is to lose it as quickly and simply as possible – a one-night stand. But her plan turns out to be anything but simple when she freaks out and leaves a gorgeous guy alone and naked in her bed with an excuse that no one with half-a-brain would ever believe. And as if that weren’t embarrassing enough, when she arrives for her first class of her last college semester, she recognizes her new theatre professor. She’d left him naked in her bed about 8 hours earlier.

This had a lot of promise, and considering Cora Carmack wrote it in her 20s, I can bet if she were to write the book now as a more seasoned writer she would do a much better job. Because this was bland AF and painfully predictable. The characters were two dimensional, the humour relied on Bliss saying unbelievably stupid things at inappropriate times, making a fool of herself constantly and landing in one awkward situation after another. And the compulsory conflict in the final third of any romcom worth its salt was absent with no apologies.
