Original 2015 Review
Just finished reading this, and I really wished I read this before I watched the movie. I watched the movie because seemingly everyone was going on and on about it, and how good it is. Maybe it’s because I’m not a movie person (I much prefer series) but the movie underwhelmed me. My expectations were much higher than reality. While reading the book I couldn’t stop wishing I was unaware of the plot going in.
That being said, I give the book 4 stars. Amy is quite the fascinating character. I love how the book really explored her character, as opposed to the movie. I really got to see inside her head. And what an interesting “head” she has. Her perspective was the more interesting one; Nick was such a dick. I really really really liked Amy, understood and identified with her in a lot of instances. Does that make me a sociopathic murderess too? Lol.
2025 Reread Review
Gone Girl really is that gworl because this was even better this time around 🤩 I loved the twist even more, despite knowing exactly when it was coming. I gained an even deeper appreciation for the storyline and writing, and I also did not hate Nick the dick as much as I did last time, though he still sucks major balls!
If Beyoncé changed the game with that digital drop, Gillian Flynn did the equivalent for the book world with Gone Girl. In the years after its release, every publisher, marketer, and their mama was scrambling to release “the next Gone Girl.” If you had to take a shot for every book you have seen blurbed as “the next Gone Girl” or “for fans of Gone Girl,” you would have died before you even made it through an eighth of them. I mean, even that godawful The Good Girl was blurbed as being for fans of Gone Girl 🥴
Gone Girl, the author’s third novel, was first published in 2012, and she has yet to release anything since. I do not blame her one bit though, because how do you top this?
