Louisa Clark has always lived a quiet, predictable life in her small village, surrounded by her family and her long-term boyfriend. But everything changes when she takes a job caring for Will Traynor, a wealthy and adventurous man who became paralysed after an accident.
Once accustomed to a life filled with travel, excitement and independence, Will is bitter about the limitations his new circumstances have placed on him. At first, his difficult personality and Lou’s unconventional approach to caring for him make them an unlikely pair. But as they spend more time together, their relationship begins to change both of them in unexpected ways.
Determined to bring some joy back into Will’s life, Lou sets out to convince him that there is still plenty worth living for. In doing so, she discovers that changing someone else’s life can change your own just as profoundly.
I started rereading Me Before You on Val’s Day (💁♀️) and, halfway into the book, I was curious to find out why I did not rate it 5 stars when I first read it in 2016. If I remember correctly, it might have been because I kinda, sorta went into the book knowing how the story ends and that kinda, sorta sullied my reading experience. This time around it seemed more like a 5-star read, but I would only know for sure when I finish the book.
Ultimately, it ended up being a 4-star read yet again, but fucking hell this time around the story made me extra emotional reliving how my mum lived the last four years of her life paralysed from the waist down due to medical negligence in the treatment of stage IV breast cancer that had metastasised to her spine 🥺
