Andrea Cooper has always believed she knows her mother, Laura. Laura has spent decades living a quiet, respectable life in the small seaside town of Gullaway Island, where she is a well-known and trusted member of the community. As far as Andrea knows, her mother has never had a reason to hide anything.
But a violent incident at the local mall shatters that certainty. Andrea witnesses a side of Laura she never knew existed and soon discovers that her mother has been living under a false identity for nearly thirty years. Whatever Laura was running from, it has finally caught up with her.
After Laura is shot by a stranger determined to uncover what she knows, Andrea begins piecing together the mystery of her mother’s hidden past. As she follows a trail of long-buried secrets, she must uncover the truth before the people who have been searching for Laura find them again. And before her mother’s past puts both their lives in danger.
I was apprehensive about reading Pieces of Her because the Goodreads reviews are quite mixed. And after being supremely let down by The Good Girl (I shudder even just thinking about that godawful read), I am now very wary of Mystery/Thrillers with highly mixed reviews. But seeing as the book was adapted into a Netflix show starring Toni Collette, I went into it with fingers crossed that it was a decent read. Which it was, but it definitely maybe would have been a 4-star read were it not for Andy’s ANNOYING AF voice… or lack thereof 🥴 By the time Andy was on her 926th “what” I was sooo fucking over her 🙄
