It has been ten years since Ellie disappeared, but Laurel has never stopped hoping that she will find her daughter.
Then she meets Floyd, a charming and confident stranger who quickly sweeps her off her feet. Before long, Laurel is spending the night at his house and meeting his nine-year-old daughter, Poppy. Poppy is bright, beautiful and full of personality, but there is something about her that leaves Laurel stunned – she looks exactly like Ellie did at that age.
Suddenly, all the questions Laurel has carried with her for the past ten years come rushing back. Could Poppy’s resemblance to Ellie really be a coincidence, or is there something more to the story?
Then She Was Gone was my first Lisa Jewell read and, given how popular she is on bookstagram, I went into it with fingers crossed that she is worth the hype. Ultimately, it was not a bad book, but it also did not leave me with any desire to pick up another one of the author’s books because it was as average as average gets 🥴
