The Forbidden Game by L.J. Smith

Books 41, 42 & 43/30.

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Whew! The Forbidden Game trilogy was 750 pages of silliness and immaturity 🥴🥴🥴

I enjoyed the four primary works in The Vampire Diaries series i.e. The Awakening & The Struggle and The Fury / Dark Reunion and in my review of The Fury / Dark Reunion, which I read in 2019 and rated 4 stars, I wrote:

Me I love vamps!

I really really do. Of all the supernatural beings I think vampires are by far the coolest. Being able to compel people sounds like the best thing in the world. I would be so fucking rich.

I read book 1 & 2 of this series 4 years ago as part of my 2015 reading challenge. And since then I have been looking for book 3 & 4 everywhere!! So when I finally found it this year among the secondhand book vendors in the CBD I legit squealed with joy. 4 years later the search was finally over. Finally! And I got it at KES 100 (less than $1) to boot.

Now, this book was so much fun. The plot, especially of book 4, is absolutely ludicrous but I could not care less because it was just such a fun read. Plus in a way I got to relive the series again, which I absolutely loved. Because vamps are just so fucking cool.

In 2020 I read the Dark Visions trilogy which was a 3 star read for me. But right off the bat I knew that the Forbidden Game trilogy would be at best a 2 star read because of how silly and immature it is. Yes I know that teenagers are the intended audience, and it was written almost 30 years ago, but still. All three books were just too silly and immature for me, and given Young Adult is my second favourite genre trust me when I say this was just NOT GOOD.

I have been curious about the author’s Night World series, but after reading this I am no longer curious. Curiosity The Forbidden Game trilogy killed the cat and I do not see myself reading anything else by L.J. Smith as I am now convinced The Vampire Diaries was as good as it gets.
